Apples have to be one of the top best fruit that we can give our bodies. For its size, it is packed full of vitamins and minerals, fiber, and natural sugars that are good for blood sugar regulation, enabling smoother digestion, reducing cholesterol, and even boosting brainpower!
Did you know cinnamon is made from the inner bark of a tree best known as Cinnamomum? It is extracted by removing the woody part from the stem and then dried making it curl into a roll turning it into a “cinnamon stick.” Cinnamon is available in two types, Ceylon cinnamon which is the true cinnamon, and cassia cinnamon which we commonly know as cinnamon.
The benefits of cinnamon especially Ceylon cinnamon are its anti-inflammatory properties that help the body fight infections and repair tissue damage, lowering blood sugar levels, and reducing heart disease risk factors. They also pair well with other warm spices like cloves, nutmeg, ginger and etc.
Chinese Star Anise
Star Anise most known to be used in Asian cuisine. It originates from the Chinese evergreen tree known as Illicium verum, but more commonly named star anise for its star-shaped pods. Star anise has a distinct flavor similar to licorice, best compared with fennel seed, and cloves. It is great for pairing with onions, poultry, beef, and citrus in small quantities to name a few.
The health benefits of star anise are its antimicrobial properties along with treating flu-like symptoms. It is also rich in antioxidants and vitamins. Like cinnamon, it improves your digestion, constipation, and helps reduce bloating.
NOTE: Be sure to not use Japanese star anise as it is highly toxic and inedible.

Let’s get started!
Time needed: 1 hour and 5 minutes.
- Take the quartered apples and juice a total of 6 apples. This will give you about 2 cups of juice. Save the other slices for later use.
- In your saucepan pour in the apple juice. Add the remaining apple slices, cinnamon sticks, and star anise to the pan.
- Let it simmer for about 1 hour until the apples are soft. Strain and serve warm in mugs.
- You can garnish with individual cinnamon sticks and star anise and thin slices of apple if you desire.
