What Are Superfood?
Superfood lattes are milk-based (or alternative milk-based) drinks made with some type of superfoods such as turmeric, spirulina, cacao, reishi, matcha, and butterfly pea flower to name a few. This is a healthy and great alternative to coffee or espresso beverages you typically enjoy. Like traditional lattes, superfood lattes can be served hot or over ice as well.
Depending on the superfood latte you want to make, their health benefits are amazing! Most of the superfood latte contains high antioxidants that are great for heart health as it fights free radicals in your body. They also have anti-inflammatory properties and can promote good gut and digestive health. And to think just by having one cup in the morning, you are starting your day right by nourishing your body with what it needs!

Some of the superfood used for lattes that are not mentioned in our recipes are:

- Adaptogen Latte (Moon Milk)

What is Spirulina?
Spirulina is an organism that is grown in both fresh and salt water. It is a type of cyanobacteria, which is a family of single-celled microbes that are often referred to as blue-green algae. It is high in vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin B1-3, Copper, and Iron.
Measurement: In 1 tablespoon (7g) of spirulina powder it contains 4g protein, 1g Fat, and 1.7g carbs.
Fun Fact: “Spirulina was a food source for the Aztecs and other Mesoamericans until the 16th century; the harvest from Lake Texcoco in Mexico” as mentioned in Wikipedia.
Benefits of Spirulina
According to Healthline, Spirulina has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It can reduce blood pressure and maintain your cholesterol levels better to help prevent heart disease. Did you know it can even help improve muscle strength and endurance? Now, you can even add it into a post-workout smoothie! Yes to getting stronger!
Butterfly Pea Latte
What is Butterfly Pea?
Clitoria ternatea, commonly known as butterfly pea, is a perennial herbaceous plant from the Fabaceae family. It is known for its blue color that can be used as a natural food coloring. This is commonly used in Thailand and Vietnam as a tea mixed with honey and lemon served after dinner or as a refreshment at a hotel and spa.
Fun fact: Did you know that you can change the color of butterfly pea by adding acids such as lemon juice or lime wedges? It goes from a deep blue into a vibrant magenta. It’s like magic!
Benefits of Butterfly Pea
Some of the benefits you get from butterfly pea are how it can improve brain health such as memory retention, provide stress relief, and even rejuvenate the skin. Not only does it have anti-inflammatory properties it can also increase your vitality. Giving that boost of energy and healing that your body needs.
Matcha Green Tea Latte
What is Matcha Green Tea?
Matcha is finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves, traditionally consumed in East Asia. Matcha is different from regular green tea as the tea bushes are shielded from sunlight about 20-30 days before they are harvested. This is because the shade will trigger an increase in chlorophyll levels giving it a dark green color and high amino acid production.
In a cup of standard matcha (4 teaspoons) it will give you 280mg of caffeine! Although it does not provide any nutritional benefits, it does give you many health benefits.
Benefits of Matcha Green Tea
Matcha is high in antioxidants which help stabilize harmful free radicals in your body preventing chronic disease. Not only that it can protect the liver and boost your brain functions. It has been shown to improve attention, memory, and reaction time as it contains caffeine and L-theanine. Healthline also mentions that it promotes heart health and can help with weight loss.
Turmeric Golden Milk Latte
What is Turmeric?
Turmeric is a flowering plant, Curcuma longa of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae, the roots of which are used in cooking. Turmeric powder has a warm, bitter, black pepper-like flavor and earthy, mustard-like aroma. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric that contains many health benefits. Did you know the greatest diversity of Curcuma species by number alone is in India, at around 40 to 45 species? Not only that, it was also used as a yellow dye used to color the robes of monks and priests as Hinduism and Buddhism were growing in Southeast Asia!
Measurement: 1 Tablespoon (7g) of turmeric powder contains 0.3g fat, 0.9g protein, and 6.3g carbs.
Fun fact: Turmeric is what gives curry that natural bright yellow color. Yes to all naturale!
Benefits of Turmeric
Since turmeric contains curcumin, this provides powerful anti-inflammatory effects and strong antioxidants. Not only that, cucrcumin is a natural anti-inflammatory compound. This will help your body fight foreign invaders and key to repairing damages. Turmeric can also improve your brain functions and lower heart disease risk.
For this recipe, we used a milk steamer attached to our espresso machine. You can however either bring milk to a boil in your microwave or in a pot. An additional option is using an electric milk frother machine. Links will be down below in the tools section!
How To Make Superfood Latte
Spirulina Latte | Matcha Green Tea Latte | Butterfly Pea Latte
Servings: 1 Cups, 12 oz. | Course: Drink | Cuisine: American
- 2 oz Hot Water
- 10 oz Steamed Hot Nut Milk (or your choice of milk)
- 2 Tsp Superfood Powder (we used matcha, butterfly pea, and/or spirulina)
- 2 Tsp Organic Ground Turmeric
- ¼ Tsp Organic Ground Ginger
- ¼ Tsp Organic Ground Cinnamon
- ¼ Tsp Organic Ground Cardamom
- Raw Honey (optional, to sweeten to desired taste)
Prep: 5 minutes | Cook Time: 5 minutes
Time needed: 10 minutes.
- Superfood Latte: Spirulina, Matcha & Butterfly Pea Latte
1. Using an electric Kettle heat water.
2. Using an electric milk frother or espresso machine Steam about 12 oz of milk.
3. Add superfood powder to a glass cup. Pour in about 2 oz of hot water into the jug.
4. Then with your hand milk frother, mix everything until it is dissolved.
5. Now, pour your superfood liquid into the milk & mix well!
6. Grab your double-wall insulated glass and pour your superfood latte in. Serve hot!
