Homemade has never been easier than making your own spice mix. Easy to make with ingredients already in your kitchen and versatile enough to use in many dishes!
This homemade Cajun seasoning is the ultimate combination of zesty, salty, and savory flavors that will elevate any dish to a new level of deliciousness.
What Is Cajun Seasoning Made Of?
The word “Cajun” refers to the Acadians, who were French colonists who first settled in an area of Canada known as Acadia. The British eventually forced the Acadians out of Canada in the early 1700s, and they migrated all the way down south to Louisiana. Cajuns learned to use any aspect of their animals for food because they didn’t have refrigerators, and they even used smoking and splicing methods to preserve their foods. Cajun cuisine is literally translated to mean “heavily seasoned” — which doesn’t necessarily mean hot, but it sometimes does due to the heavy use of cayenne pepper in many recipes.
To make your own Cajun spices, add paprika, salt, garlic powder, cracked black pepper, onion powder, dried oregano (or other Italian herbs), and cayenne pepper in the recipe measurement increments. To fill an entire spice jar, double or triple the volume. Have fun seasoning!
How To Use Homemade Cajun Seasoning
I often use this seasoning on just about everything like stir-frys, soups, kabobs, and more with it. It goes particularly well with:
- Proteins like chicken, fish, shellfish, pork, beef, and tofu.
- Veggies are especially good roasted or in stir-fries. Cajun seasoning is also delicious on all types of potatoes (baked, fried, fries, etc.).
- Add into Dips. It’s delicious mixed into hummus, queso, spinach artichoke dip, and even guacamole for an extra kick!
Breads and crackers: Elevate your flatbread, pita chips, and a variety of other breads with a sprinkle of Cajun to liven it up.
Try using this homemade Cajun spice to make Cajun Garlic Shrimp. It’s a perfect quick and easy meal to go over with rice or tacos for a family dinner!
